We just booked a flight to Nice at the end of September. We also booked two nights at Hotel le Royale, has anyone stayed there? Comments? I believe that based on info from this site and the RS book, it is not worth driving in Nice. We will pick up a car at the airport as we leave Nice on Day 3. We are trying to locate a great spot to be the base for the rest of the trip. Based on what I read in the RS Provence book, St. Remy may be the best place to stay since it is close to many great sites and quieter than Avignon and Arles. I am about to take up the RS recommendation on Les Mas des Carassins. It sounds great until you get them to email you the price. It is 284 Euros! They claim it is still peak season (September 30?, really?) and you must book with meals. I do not want to book with meals. Looking for another hotel suggestion!
Thanks,
Three weeks ago, I stayed in St Remy at the Hotel l'Amandiere. It's just outside the center of town, and we found it quite pleasant, with a lovely garden, little balconies off the rooms, and off-street free parking. (Believe me when I say, you will come to truly appreciate this!) Price (not including the optional 8 euro breakfast) was under 70 euros per night, but that was an April price. You might check for late September rates. No restaurant on site (except breakfast) but many great options in St. Remy.
Be sure to get a room with a view of the Med at the Royal in Nice. We stayed there for a night before a flight home and had a gorgeous view and nice room. Good idea to get your rental car on your way out of Nice. I haven't stayed in St Remy so can't recommend a hotel. I loved Le Beffroi in Vaison la Romaine, beautiful room with a view, lovely garden, great food, nice people. I have also stayed in Carpentras and Arles. You don't say how long you are staying. Have you considered renting a house/apartment? You might check VRBO.
See about Hotel Ben Vengudo very near St. Remy. It was absolutely beautiful. like out of a dream, really. i could go on.
Thank you for the suggestions! We want to stay 3 nights. I checked out BenVanguda(sp?) , it looked fantastic until I saw that you must pay 100% up front with no cancellations!
Still looking for suggestions...love the older hotels/b &b's that have modern interiors. Some of the places I have checked out on line look like they may have been remodeled in 1966.
Look up Hotel Sous les Figuiers in St. Remy. More like a B&B. We loved it.
Although not a hotel or B and B, we stayed at Les Resources in St. Remy. They have about 8 or 9 small apartments - ours had a bedroom, lovely large bathroom, sitting area and small kitchenette that was very nicely equipped. Each unit has a lovely little patio that faces a greenbelt - a lovely spot for enjoying the garden with a nice aperitif before dinner. There is also a nice sized pool on the property which was refreshing after a busy day of touring. We went out a couple of evenings and one evening enjoyed a roast chicken, salad, cheese and bread from the local supermarche which is walking distance from Les Resources.
I have stayed at Les Ateliers de Image a number of times. It is pricey, but has secure parking and is right in town. Beautiful, modern, artsy hotel with gorgeous grounds and great breakfast. At the other end of the spectrum is the Hotel Van Gogh... a few blocks away from center of town, but very reasonable and parking is easy. They also had a pool, but the hotel itself was quite sparse and looks like it was last remodeled in the 50's, but it was clean enough and great for the budget. There was also another B&B across the street from that and it was OK as well, but I don't remember the name. Hotel Van Gogh was more like a motel, rather than a B&B. These are all in St. Remy just to clarify.
