We will be traveling to Provence Aug 17 - Sept 3. The first week will be on a river cruise and will be in Arles 2 days and Avignon one day and night. After the cruise we plan to spend 9 nights in Provence. We want a village experience but have good choices to walk to dinner. We have read about the favorites St Remy and Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Should we stay in one place or two? We love it all ... Beautiful vistas, culture, walking and hiking, wineries, good food, interesting villages, the French and their beautiful language, history, Roman influence, etc. Any suggestions on where to stay including accommodations are very much appreciated.
I really liked Lourmarin. We rented a house from France Homestyle but there are hotels there too. The Friday market is lots of fun.
It has been ten years, but we used St. Remy for a base and recommend it highly. Strolling in the village each evening, good restaurants then, sipping pastis whatever... a fabulous market as well,.Bon Voyage
We stayed at Vaison La Romaine. the hotel was La Fete en Provence. I saw wineries on your list of activities; Chateauneuf de Pape is nearby (we did a private tour) and Vacqueyras and Gigondas were very close. Hiking is available nearby, and obviously there is Roman culture in the town itself.
We liked Isle sur la Sorgue...lots of things to do and easy drives, but since you have 9days you might like to continue on to the Var for a few days. we stayed in Cotignac....a wonderful Tuesday market, vineyards....really a lovely village and many villages around that are very interesting.
I forgot to tell you..... check out this blog on Cotignac. Google ...A Year in Cotignac by Michele di Falco. it is a wonderful description of a lovely area. The Gorges of Verdun are also close by I think.
