Provence B&B's

We are 2 couples looking for a good B&B to use as a homebase in Provence in September. There are so many well-reviewed B&B's in the usual guidebooks and online that we could use some help narrowing down the choices. We'd like one with nearby places to eat but we don't want to be in the larger towns like Avignon or Arles. We'll be exploring the region everyday by car & want a nice place to come home to at night and a really good breakfast. Recommendations would be most appreciated - thanks.

Easy! Check out Bastide Sainte Anne in Castillon-du-Gard...actually in Languedoc, just outside Provence. Utterly fantastic B&B...breakfast is on a porch overlooking the Pont du Gard. We are veteran travellers and this was our all-time favorite B&B...and it meets all of your criteria and then some!

Last May we stayed at Sous les Figuiers in St.-Remy-en-Provence. It is actually a hotel but feels like a B&B. Very friendly owners, one is an artist and has her studio there. Rooms are tastefully decorated and look newly remodeled. Most rooms have terraces, some do not. No TV. Has a pool. Great breakfast in the morning--fresh juice, bread they bake themselves, croissant, jams, coffee made to order. It is one block from the center of town but feels secluded. It is set back from the street and is surrounded by trees, including fig trees. Check out their website. There are many good restaurants just 5 minutes' walk away. St. Remy is a pretty town and centrally located. Have a great time!

We stayed in Vaison la Romaine in a bed and breakfast called L'eveche.

Great rooms, very nice hosts and we loved this part of Provence. Excellent market in town on Tuesday. Good location for touring the southern Cote du Rhone.

I recommend the Vaison La Romain recommendation of Dean...I was there a couple of years ago...it is the old Bishop's *?) house, located on top of the mountain in the City Medieval...Fantastic view, and most importantly, the hosts are wonderful with suggestions and help. Be sure to see the market in the town on Tuesday (?) which has been held each week since the 1500's. The street to the hotel is medieval, not made for big autos, but you can navigate it -- parking is just down from the hotel about 1/2 block. The city has some Roman ruins as well. The breakfasts on the patio overlooking the main city were fabulous.
