Problems currently renting an apartment in Paris

My family and I are currently renting an apartment in Paris and we woke up this morning to loud jack hammering banging and sawing. The apartment across the way is being gutted, a very big project. As renters for a week, do we have any rights? Should have the renting company informed us before hand? Is there anything we can do now while in Paris besides putting up with this very loud (un-Paris) Problem?

You're renting an apartment in a very large CITY where millions of people work and live, not some controlled-environment resort. It might not hurt to inquire with the rental company, but don't expect anything more than shrugged shoulders. Look at it this way, do the other apartment tenants who live on that street full-time have any recourse? Probably not.

Joyce, This is in fact not an uncommon problem in an old city where renovating interiors is ongoing in every neighborhood! It happened to us two years ago and again a few weeks ago. It was a horrible surprise. However, most probably your agency and the apartment owner didn't know when the work would begin on the neighboring apartment or even that work was planned. In our case, we asked the workmen how long the jackhammers under our bedroom would last and it was only a day and a half in the first case and a few minutes in the second.

I'd first ask the workmen how long the jack hammers will last. If it's not acceptable, then I'd contact the agency to see what could be worked out.
