Prices in Austria/Salzburg Hotels

I have a two-part question...
1. Is Austria generally more expensive than Germany?
2. Does anybody have a recommendation for a centrally located, inexpensive hotel in Salzburg?
Thanks!!!

Hi Erin,

Sorry I can't help with a centrally located hotel in Salzburg. We always have a car and stay outside of Salzburg. I can say that we have found Austria no more expensive than Germany in general. On five recent trips, I haven't noticed any price differences between the two countries.

We spent 4 nights in Salzburg last month (end of July). After checking all of Rick's recommendations, I chose instead the Salzburg Hotel Star Zentrum. It's a 3 year old hotel with a great staff. You take the Monchburg pedestrian Tunnel (at the end of Getreidestrasse)100 yards to the hotel (it's right at the end of the tunnel). A really modern hotel almost downtown, and reasonably priced. You can find it on booking.com.

Hi Erin,
... You could visit the Tourist Bureau in Salzburg about finding inexpensive lodgings. We've done that a couple of times and found rooms in Linzergasse just below Kapuzinerberg (Capuchin mountain). Don't recall the names of those hotels. The hotel/ restaurant Goldenen Ente (above link) is certainly to our liking (food and lodging) and their rates seem reasonable, but we have no doubt you can find a room for less via the Tourist Bureau.
... In our experience, Austrian pricing seems to be a bit less than prices for the same things in Germany.

Not sure what your idea of inexpensive is but we stayed in the Golden Krone out of Rick's book. Nice place. I'd go there again. Good location.

1 I wouldn't consider Austria more expensive than Germany...with the current dollar/euro conversion they are both a little pricy.

  1. I have stayed at Hotel Elephant twice--prime location. It is a best western so it isn't too pricey.

Erin,

I was just in both Austria and Germany in May, and found the cost of lodgings about equal. This can vary slightly depending on which Hotels one uses (I normally use Hotels listed in Rick's books, as the listings provide a choice of different price ranges).

I stayed at Hotel Goldene Krone in Salzburg, and would certainly recommend it. The room was great and the owners were wonderful to deal with. It's "centrally located" but you'll have to determine if you consider it to be "inexpensive".

Happy travels!

We just returned from Austria and stayed in the Gasthof Hinterbruhl in Salzburg. Great central location, good price (around 80 euros for large triple and balcony and breakfast). Nice room had its own sitz tub shower with toilet down the hall. Quiet square. Walking distance to the main sights. Only thing was we ordered orange juice in addition to the morning coffee and wasn't told it was 3 euros each for each day until we went to check out. We thought it was included since they brought one for our son each morning. No biggie - just like to know upfront.

Hi Erin,
... cut and paste the above link into your Internet search box. This is a very romantic hotel right in the center of old town Salzburg (Alt Stadt). The place is historic, quaint, and the food is outstanding. Check out their prices, but don't bypass this one.

... we've never found Austria more expensive than Germany. In Austrian villages, some real bargains. You may not want to come back to Shoreline.
