Getting ready to purchase tickets for Oct 10 from Barcelona to Madrid. The price per person is 160USD. Is this an average price? Seemed steep to me, but not sure. Thanks!

As you are quoting in dollars, I think you will be looking at an agency price, i.e. 'walk up' price plus their fee and not at the national rail network, RENFE, site. I am sorry, I tire of regularly giving all the explanation - please read at least this to find large discounts - http://www.seat61.com/Spain-trains.htm#How_to_use_www.renfe.com and as you are from the U.S. you may need this hugely comprehensive guide if you run into purchasing problems -
