I was hoping to find advice on what type of pre-paid cell phone I can purchase while in Europe (for use in the UK and Spain....starting in the UK). Basically, I just want the cheapest phone available, with the best possible phone rates within Spain and the UK, and calls with the US. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Rand, There's an ENORMOUS amount of information available here on the HelpLine concerning Cell phones. If you do a search on the site, it should provide hours of reading. As you're starting in the U.K., the best solution might be to pick up a PAYG phone when you arrive there, as the rates are quite good. If there's a Carphone Warehouse close to where you'll be staying, you could start there. Cell shops are somewhat ubiquitous in the U.K., so you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. The various networks have a variety of calling plans, so you may find it helpful to have a look at the websites for O2, Orange, Vodaphone, Virgin or other networks, to determine which plan might work best for you. Be sure that you're clear on the method for topping-up. Happy travels!

We ordered a Telestial prepaid phone (incl charger, SIM card, and $5 airtime) while still in the U.S. so we were able to give the U.S. number to people who might have need to reach us. I see that right now its selling for $19 but the shipping is about $11 and up. The calls from the US were "free" but had a .30 surcharge which could add up if you expect to receive a lot of calls. Their website explains the plans and charges well. Whenever possible (such as in hotel rooms) we used Skype to talk, as it was cheaper.
