I have a daughter that will be leaving the USA in about a week, for a three month stay in Germany and Poland (working with a group called, "Steiger International"). She will be staying in some of the smaller cities in Germany and I am trying to figure out which pre-loaded credit card would most likely be best accepted (with the lowest fees) to use there. I don't think she will have access to ATM machines. Can anyone help?
Preloaded cards are not credit cards, but debit cards. It has been reported here that people have had trouble using such cards to make purchases (but no trouble using them in ATM machines), and the fees and exchange rates are high. I would be very surprised if she was nowhere near an ATM anywhere in Germany or Poland. The best (cheapest) route to go is to use her regular, everyday debit card to take money out of her account at an ATM. For security, you could open a special account from which to draw so that it was not linked to her regular account. I would think she could contact the organization to see abou ATM access. Others must have had similar questions.
Why don't you think she will have access to ATMs?? They're literally everywhere:) All of the various pre-loaded cards are affiliated with either Master Card or Visa, so any merchant who accepts credit cards will accept cash cards.
But it would be easier and cheaper (less fees) to simply open a checking account for your daughter in the US, and get a regular debit card linked to it.
ATM's are everywhere, sometimes you just have to look. In the DL andPL, accessed ATM's in villages up to cities. What you need to do is to set up a joint account with both your names' on it at a CU so you can load the Debit card and watch the withdrawals, which is what I think you are really concerned about. Did this pre ATM with oldest daughter while she was doing her Jr. year in the EU along with when she was teaching English (Visa and AMEX)in France after graduation, and with her sister in the ATM era while she did the same. It gave us an idea of where she was along with where the $$ was going, along with the peace of mind if the cards were compromised.
