Pre-Buy Rail Tickets or the Day of (December- France to Germany)

I am pretty good on the German rail buying, less so on France. We are doing a rental car switch from France to Germany- dropping a car off at the station in Metz, France and spending the night in Metz. The next morning, we will take the train to Saarbruecken, Germany and then picking-up another car, there (not at the HBF- but we can take a bus from the station to 500 meters away from the rental agency.)

So..my question is this- are there advance deals to be had on a train that goes from France to Germany or will I do just as well just buying the tickets the morning I leave? It will be me, and 3 girls (13, 7, and 4). Thank you!

OK, after looking at those pictures, I retract my Cleveland statement. I've only seen the very ugly outlying areas of Metz, not the inner city.

Hope there's no overly sensitive Clevelanders reading...

At least you didn't say Tacoma! ; ) The first time we drove into Tacoma on I-5, I thought it was hideous...until we got away from the freeway and closer to the water. (And this was when it still smelled of pulp mill. Ahhhh!!) I have a soft spot for the secret treasures.

I admit I don't know the answer to the question for a fact, but given how close Metz and Saarbrucken are to each other, I doubt you'll save much money with advanced purchasing.

BTW, you're probably the first person I have read on this site planning to spend the night in Metz, which looked to me like the Cleveland of France.

According to the German Rail site, you will take regional trains from Metz to Saarbruecken, with one connection in Forbach. The ride takes one hour and the fare is €15.10 (no discount for advance purchase).
