Prague and Euros

Hi -
Our party of four is flying into Prague on September 19th,2012. Our apartment is quoted in euros. We know that the Czech Republic has its own currency. Our question is: Will the ATM machines at the airport dispense just the local currency? If so, we need to obtain euros to pay for our lodging. I am sure there is a simple answer to this question, but the people on this board are always so nice, that I thought I would ask. Bill

Maybe the apartment is priced in euros on the website for ease of shoppers' comparison, but you actually pay the owner in crowns . . . . Best to ask specifically (you sound like you're not sure).

When I stayed in an apartment in Croatia, it was quoted in euros- the owner was happy to accept either euros or Croatian kuna. I suspect it's the same case here. It would be entirely unreasonable to demand only euros from non-Eurozone visitors.

It's common for non-Eurozone hotels in Europe to quote their rates online in euros. Some will even give you a quote in USD or GBP. But once you're there, you'll always pay in the local currency. In fact, if they offer to accept euros or any currency other than their own, you should always decline. If you accept, you're letting the hotel set the exchange rate - which will always be skewed in their favor. ATM's in any particular country will always dispense local currency. I've heard of ATM's that will allow a choice of currency, but I've never encountered one.

We did not find any dual currency ATMs in Prague last year. The only time we have seen dual currency ATMs was in Ireland and Scotland where you had a choice of local pounds or British pounds.

Thanks for all your great responses! We emailed the owner, and, as you all predicted, he will be happy to take Czech Kronas. Thank you all. Bill
