post cruise book flight

Our cruise is supposed to dock outside of Rome at 7 a.m. How much time should we allow for disembarking and travel to the airport to book a flight?
Thanks.

Three to four hours if you use public transportation. About two hours if you use a taxi.

Lori: If your ship docks at 7:00 am I think you need 5 or 6 hours for the disembarking process and the journey to the airport, which would allow you to arrive for a flight leaving at, say, 3:00 pm with a couple of hours to check in and go through the hateful security, etc.

Norma, we have made the run four times. We are always in Rome within two hours. We always make a request for an early departure so off the ship within the first 30 minutes. It is a fifteen minute walk from the port entrance when the shuttle drops you to the train station. Another 15 minutes or so to buy a ticket to Rome. An hour back to Rome plus waiting for the train but they run every 20 minutes. A short walk to the Leonard Express platform and another 30 minutes to the airport.

Now if the cruise started in Rome, you can save time by purchasing the return ticket and the LExpress ticket ahead of time.

However, if three or four -- and even two -- can save time and money by taking a taxi from the port entrance which I think is in the range of 50-60E. The taxi ride is less than an hour since both the airport and port are in the same general area. If there are two of you you could double up with another couple provided your luggage is light.

Also, are you departing on a flight from Rome DIRECTLY to the US or connecting to another European city for a direct flight back? That will make a difference in time requirements in the Rome airport.

Wow! Thank you for the great information. Frank, there are 3 of us with my husband, myself and my 18 year old daughter so we won't be light on luggage!!
We are going to fly to Spain from Rome (port of Civitavecchia). We will be spending a few days in Rome prior to the cruise...can we buy our tickets that far ahead? We would like to book our flight as early as possible so we have some time in Spain.
Thanks.
