I'm traveling across Europe via train in December, including my first trip to Switzerland. As I recently moved from Seattle to the UK to study, I don't have any skiwear/heavy waterproof clothing with me and I don't really want too buy any or try to stuff it in my backpack. So ... is it even possible to visit the Berner Oberland area with regular winter wear (warm coat, denim/jeans, boots, gloves, earmuffs)? Or will I freeze? I don't plan to ski while I'm there (will save that for another time), anyway. And I'm finding that many of the places that I would have stayed in the Murren area, for instance, are closed anyway. Would I be foolish to skip the area and just enjoy the scenery from the train from Montreux all the way to Luzern? Thanks for any and all advice! Kristin
If you're not skiing or boarding, then there's no need for water-resistant clothing. You can't hike at that time of year (although unless the high pressure area that's keeping things abnormally dry over the Alps right now clears out soon, you might be able to!), so you probably won't be spending hours at a time outdoors. A winter coat, gloves, scarf, a warm sweater, and good winter socks should be sufficient.
Thanks, Tom!
