Can someone recommend a wine tasting tour or private wine guide in the Porto / Douro Valley region of Portugal? Other suggestions for enjoying this wine region would be appreciated.
I don't know any tours, but when in Porto you can simply walk along the riverfront and stop in whichever port warehouse you wish. Almost all have tours and tastings. There is at least one tasting house that has a variety of ports available for a nominal fee. It's a great way to get started even if you don't know anything about it.
Just as the previous poster, posted in Porto just walk along the river to different shops and you will be able to try more port than you can drink! Try the white port...I it great on a warm day! Also, your hotel may be able to give you some recommendations.
The Douro and Dao areas are among the most active and dynamic in Portugal these days. Some really good wines are being made there. Port is still wonderful, but the real story are the dry reds and whites. I don't know about specific tours, but see this site: http://winesofportugal.info/ You can look up selected wine producers in each region. Really, it may be best just to rent a car, map out a tentative itinerary and go. When you visit a winemaker you like a lot, ask for their recommendations on who to visit next. Portugal's a great place. Have a blast.
We did a tour through Sogrape of Ferreira, Offley, and Sandeman. But I'm not sure what you'd have to do to get the same one - it was pre-arranged for us. http://eng.sograpevinhos.eu/visitas
