Portugal- Stops from Lisbon to Salema

Hey Everyone.

In May I will be driving from Lisbon to Tavira in 5 days. I would like to stop off in Salema (close to Lagos, but not as touristy) along the way.

I would like to stay in Salema for 2 nights-but I have 2 free nights to stay in other places (or place) along the way. I thought it would be neat to drive throught the National Park and stay in little villages, but I have no idea if this would be a great idea or not. If anyone has any suggestions for places for me to go, that would be awesome.
Day 1: pick up car and drive to??
Day 2: ??
Day 3: Drive to Salema
Day 4: Salema
Day 5: Drive to Tavira

Thanks a lot!

Hey! Thanks for the tip about the 2 villages in the National Park. The pictures of the villages look amazing!!

I am planning on staying in Lisbon for 3 nights and then renting a car. But I do have one question. Salema is close to Lagos-my understanding is that area is the southern coast?? Will Tavira really be any warmer than Salema?

Thanks a lot!

Janine,

It sounds like a great idea to me. While biking through the area I stumbled upon what was, at the time, a tiny little fishing village, Carrapateira. This would be my recommendation as a place to spend the night. I usually stay at a fabulous B&B called Das Dunas (tel. +351 282 973 118). If possible, check out the restaurant on the road to the beach. Fantastic fish and grilled meats for a very good price.

My parents really like Aljezur for its quaint feel. The sunset from the lighthouse just outside of Sagres is also worth the trip.

That part of the world is magical, enjoy.

Janine, I don't think that Salema is worth two nites. It is a quaint place to visit for a day trip, and that is it.

Why not a couple of nites in Lisbon,(lots to see) and then spend the rest of your time where it will be warm...the southern coast.

We stayed in Taviara and day triped the whole southern coast. You could stay in the fishing village instead, and day trip with your car.

The freeways in Portugal are awesome, and there is no one on them.

Janine,
We really liked Salema--we stayed at the A Mare Hotel and our room had a beautiful view of the ocean (http://www.algarve.co.uk/OrgForm.htm). The food at the local restaurants was great--fresh seafood. The town is quiet but for us, it was a relaxing stop between Madrid/Seville/Granada and Lisbon.

Salema/ Tavira...are all in the Algarve, and all are on the Southern coast. Pick up a copy of Rick Steves "Portugal", great descriptions of the area and advice where to visit.

No matter whre you stay on the Southern coast, you will have a great time.
