Hi, We'll be visiting Portugal in early September for 8 days. As amateur winemakers, we're especially interested in the wine regions. We also prefer to stay in B&Bs & enjoy the countryside to the cities. Wonder if you could make some recommendations to us? Appreciate your advice & tips. Thank you!
In northern Portugal is the Douro Valley, birthplace of port wine. The main attraction is touring the quintas, the farms that produce port and table wines. Rick gives lots of details in his book Portugal. Near Alcobaca in west central Portugal near the coast is the national Museum line, www.ivv.min-agricultura.pt. Run by local cooperative winery, the Museum teaches you about Portuguese wine.
Try the Casa de Sezim (www.sezim.pt). Near Guimaraes, this very old but lovingly maintained guest house is owned by a family that also produces Portuguese vinho verde.
We would have loved to stay in a Quinta but those were alot more pricey. we stayed at Residencial Douro (in RS bk)in Pinhao. Excellent and squeaky clean across from the beautiful tiled train station which we loved watching from our "Juliet" balconey.
We stayed at the Quinta de la Rosa just outside Pinhao (a little bit west of town on the north side of the river). They have lovely guest rooms, a daily tour of their port and wine making facilities, and a tasting room. We also visited Quinto do Panascal, a little bit west of Pinhao on the south side of the river. I believe the road up to the Quinta is pretty well marked. They have a self-guided tour using Sony-Walkman-type cassette players, and the view down into the river valley (not the Douro, it is on the other side of a ridge) is spectacular.
