We'll soon be renting a car in Portugal for about 2 weeks. In a recently implemented move, many 'A' numbered highways in Portugal have tolls that can only be read by an electronic reader within a passing car - no toll booths. I've read about devices that can be rented by visitors and about buying 3 or 5 day passes. This all seems inconvenient, and I'm wondering how the major rental car companies are handling this for their customers. Do their cars already come with electronic devices? Do they provide devices at the time of rental and is this a cost efficient way of getting a device? It's hard to avoid these electronic toll highways, especially A23 if you're travelling in east-central Portugal. Thanks.
