I am planning to visit Portugal in August, which places are not to be missed in Algarve and in the rest of Portugal?
Salema is great - Point Sagres is also nice - need a car too but check out the west tip of continental europe and navigation museum/school from prince henry. In Salema - stay at the smaller guest hotel in ricks book. It was run by a danish couple but I think last summer was their last season of managing the place. The rooms are great! (Forgot the name but its in the RS Book).
We also did a nice hike in the area with the local who took us around the cliffs and small towns.
Salema is a small sleepy place with a lovely beach. We stayed for 3 days but had a car to travel up in the hills as well as Lagos which is nice as well. RS Spain Portugal book outlines several areas in the Algarve - check it out
The Algarve is going to be very hot in august, so make sure that you find a place with AC, and a pool, or easy access to the ocean. When you are down south make sure you spend some time in Lisbon also.
We enjoyed visiting Porto and the Duro area. The river cruses should be fun that time of year.
We found all of the hints and suggestions in Rick's book to be "right on the money".
Read the book, and put your own plans together. You may want to spend more time in the North, which will be cooler, and still pretty in late summer.
