Porto/ Oporto

Hey guys.

I´m planning a road trip through Portugal and northern Spain. I keep running into a discrepancy between a town called ¨Porto¨and one called ¨Oporto.¨ On the map they look almost to be in the same place.

Does anyone know anything about this? Are they in fact the same town?

Thanks so much!

Porto and Oporto refer to the same location the are used interchangeably. Also, Porto is not a town, it's Portugal second largest city. It has it's own international airport, brand new subway system, two first rate soccer teams, and most importantly lots of Port wine :)

Thank you so much. Totally made my day as I now definitely have a starting point. My bad for calling it a ¨town.¨ :-)

Liana,
You'll enjoy visiting Porto. We were there last March. We arrived there from Coimbra, Portual which was also a fun destination and we went to Santiago de Compostela from there. Don't know if it's on your itinerary but Santiago was one of my favorite cities on that trip.
Have a great trip!

Sharon, thanks so much for that. We were thinking of just spending a day in each Porto and Santiago de Compostela. Any advice, must-sees, etc? I really appreciate it.
