Rick's travel books used to warn about the possibility of having your car broken into at Pont du Gard. The 2013 Provence book makes no mention of the subject that I can find. Has this problem gone away with the 15 Euro parking fee? Thanks in advance GW
Grant , Frankly I don't think the parking fee has anything to do with the potential for a break in . For that matter in any large car park , whether in Europe or here at home , it's always a possibility . When we parked at the Pont du Gard or the American cemetery in Normandy , or dozens of other locations that Rick Steves tends , IMO , to be somewhat overly paranoid about ,you can't let it rule your plans . Just use a little common sense i.e. park as close to the main visitors center as possible , not at the far end of the lot ,take appropriate insurance when you rent the car ,and above all don't leave anything important in the car ( electronics , sensitive documents, medications , etc . ) When I travel I want to see these places , it's why I made the trip . If my clothes are in the trunk , out of sight , and the car is stolen or ransacked , that won't cause me to skip a beat . There are stores all over to buy a shirt or two . The Pont du Gard was a highlight for us , I''m sure it will be for you too .
I agree with what Steven said. And the Pont du Gard was a highlight for us too. Do not miss going to the museum they have there before walking up to see the Pont. It is a great little museum and will make the experience that much more worthwhile.
Thank you both for the reassurance. I'm looking forward to visiting there. Grant
