We are going to the Pont du Gard and want to know if there is a best time to go during the day for a photography buff. Any advice is appreciated. Anne
It runs NNW - SSE. The higher hills are on the western side and would block late pm sunlight or put the structure in shadows. Also, if you try to take the picture from the west side, the lower roadway will be hidden behind the essentially flat western facade. Dawn or as soon thereafter as possible. From the east side.
The locals treat it like a day at the beach. A bathing suit and towel would be appropriate to hang out on the "sand". Early for photography but the warmer part of the day for swimming. There is food available, a restaurant and the museum is pretty interesting also. It's really an amazing place.
The time of year you go can make a diference. We went in Nov. and it had very few visitors. We got there early and stayed about 4 hours.
Thanks, fellows. We are here right now in Provence for a couple of weeks. We will select a non-cloudy day and gat there as early as we can. I think the "beach weather" may be over for the season, but we'll take it under advisement! Anne
As an aside, if you're anywhere near Castillon du Gard, go to the church in the center of the village, walk behind it, and you'll see an amazing view of the Pont du Gard along the river. We only found it because we were walking with some friends in Castillon when one of them disappeared and then a few minutes later reappeared from behind the church and said: "Come out back and see this."
Great suggestion, Robert.
