Please review our basic itinerary! (Germany & Austria)

We are flying into Frankfurt arriving on a Monday morning in Sept. We will be in country 10 days. The main purpose of the trip is to visit family friends I have not seen in a very long time and to show my husband where I used to live.

So here is a basic itinerary:

Mon-Th Mosel Valley

Th-Sun Berchtesgaden/Salzburg

Sun-Tues Innsbrook/Garmisch (maybe till Wed)

Tues-Th Mosel Valley then depart Frankfurt on Th afternoon

If we feel really adventurous, we might do quick day drips to Luxembourg and Lichtenstein, time permitting.

Any suggestions? Sound doable? Thanks!

Hi Mary E,

Sound doable. I'm sure you know the drive from Mosel to Berchtesgaden/Salzburg is a long one. About 7 hours. We did the same trip in 2007 but stayed in Rothnberg ob der Tauber in between these two. It was about 3 hours or so to Rothenberg and 4 hours or so Rothenberg to Berchtesgaden.

Regarding Liechtenstein... I really wouldn't bother. You won't see anything there that you won't see in Bavaria and Austria.

Now this is just my opinon... we liked Hall in Tirol better than Innsbruck and Mittenwald better than Garmisch. Innsbruck and Garmisch are bigger cities with the traffic, crowds, etc. that come with cities.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Sounds like a great trip! You might want to look at hitting the Salzkammergut Lake District outside of Salzburg for a day trip to Hallstatt or another lake town. Also, a day/night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You could stop by Neuschwanstein castle on the way there from Innsbruck/Garmisch. Don't know about your beer-drinking/partying proclivities, but I believe Oktoberfest may be starting in Munich around that time as well...

I agree with Paul, Mary. Lichtenstein is a WASTE of time. We took a day tour of Austria, Switzerland and there and they took us to Vaduz. We spent a few hours there, and it was SOOOO boring. The only good thing that came out of it was that we got our passport stamped and we were able to add one more country to our list of countries visited. Oh yeah, and they have Swiss Army knives for cheap... I also left my bank card at the gift shop. :(
But to comment on the rest of your itinerary...I think you have a good pace. That's sort of how we like to do it. At least a few nights in each location which allows you to settle in a little bit... Garmisch and Salzburg are two of my favorite cities!
