O.K. This is a total wild goose chase, but here goes...
Eight years ago we went to a very ornate cathedral, the inside had gilt everything, and a lot of painted surfaces (If I remember correctly). It was off the beaten path in Germany or Eastern France. The outside was nothing special, and it was in the middle of nowhere. We had read about it in either a Rick Steves book, Fodors or Frommers. Any ideas?
Could you be talking about Weiskirche? It is in the middle of nowhere along the Romantic Road. It is notable not only for its incredible Rococco interior, but for the "crying" Christ on the alterpiece.
sounds like wieskirche to me. in the middle of nowhere and incredibly ornate.
