In mid-June my family will be leaving Brussels heading south on the train to Luxembourg City. The only reason we wanted to go was to say we've been and to see the famouse caves. Then my husband realized that the Nurburg racetrack is to the east, just over the border in Germany and he's scheduled time to do a lap with a professional driver - dream realized. Here's the catch - the hotels in Luxembourg City are outrageous and, of course, the one nice, cheap place is booked. Once we get to Luxembourg City we don't really need to stay right downtown. Is there any place nearby that is clean & cheap that we can get to via public transportation? Is the bus system great or do we just need to break down and rent a car. Can you take a train from Luxembourg City to Nurburg? Bus? If we have to rent a car to get there it seems like we might as well just book a cheaper hotel on the outskirs of town.
Check with trivago.com for hotel rates in Luxembourg. You can search even within a 50 km radius... We once stayed on that hill outside of Luxembourg City where the EU institutions are. There was frequent and good bus service into town and back. Alternatively you can even stay over in Trier as it's all close to each other in that area. So forget about the distances you're used to in MN. You actually do need a car in that area, especially for your drive up to Nürburgring. The only bus to the ring is from Koblenz. Nürburgring sits on the top of a hill in the quite beautiful Eifel mountains (all Volcanic if you care to know). There is nothing around that ring other than trees. The drive is quite steep, so there is no way trains could make it, even if there were any tracks. You really have to rent a car. You might find it cheaper to rent from Trier than from Luxembourg.
