Many of you have been so helpful as I plan this month long loop trip by car including many of the "Best of " sites. Everything is almost in place and the departure date is approaching. I want to revisit a similar question that I asked earlier. I realize my fellas would really like to visit Berchtesgaden, instead of Rothenburg. I think I have figured out a way for us to do it... It might be a blitz, so to speak, but I think doable. HERE WAS THE ORIGINAL PLAN: Two days in the Rhine Valley (Thank you to those who helped me with that), first night sleeping in Bacharach and the second night traveling out an hour to a Frankfurt hotel on our way to see Rothenburg the next day. That was a good plan, but I think they would rather see Berchesgaden instead of Rothenburg. So what if.... I departed Bacharach late afternoon, drove as far as Munich, which is about four hours drive. The the next morning, drive to Berchtesgaden, only a couple more hours drive. Would we have time to visit the Documentation Center/bunker and the The Eagles Nest? I hate to give up Rothenburg but absolutley do not want to re book everything down the line after this! :) So not an option.
I know this is long, but many of you have been excellent with your wise suggestions Thank you!!
I will add that continuing on our loop after Berchtesgaden, we are headed to the Cinque Terre. The milegae and time are similar from either Rothenburg or Berchtesgaden. So this won't impact the next day significantly. This was our ONLY long drive day of the whole month. ALL other drive days are short drives between destinations with more than one day stay in most. We planned to start very early on this day. So this won't be impacted.
Cynthia, WHEN is this trip taking place? Access to the Eagle's Nest is subject to road conditions going up the mountain (ie: if there's snow, the road will be closed). You might find it interesting to take a guided tour of that site (contact www.eagles-nest-tours.com/EN/ for information). I'd probably allow at least two hours to visit the Dokumentation Centre and Bunkers. Note that all exhibits are in German, but you can rent an English Audioguide. The Bunkers are quite interesting, although there's not a lot to see there. While in Berchtesgaden, you could also take a Salt Mine tour (if you're interested). I can't provide any information on the driving times, as I normally use train or bus whenever possible. Happy travels!
