Places to visit near Munich

I am going to Oktoberfest, and the trip to Munich is scheduled for 3 days. Is there anywhere else around Munich that anyone would suggest visiting for a day?

Try Prien on the Chiemsee. Beautiful scenery and one of Ludwig's castles on an island in the lake.

Besides Herrenchiemsee (Prien), Salzburg, Hohenschwangau (Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau castles), Oberammergau and Linderhof, Bayrischer Oberland (Schliersee, Kochelsee, Tegernsee), Burghausen, Freising (Weihenstephan brewery).

There are so many places to visit around Munich, which have already been listed. I can HIGHLY (strongly) suggest the Andechs Monastery, which serves arguably the best beer in Bavaria (if not the world :-))! Other beautiful places are Augsburg, Mittenwald and Bayrischzell to name a few. Munich had fantastic weather last year in September/October so I hope for you, it happens again this year! It truly is magical in the Bavarian Alps during autumn!

Lee beat me to most of the suggestions, but let me also add Regensburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf to the list of possibilities.

Hi Alex, So many have already been suggested, but it depends on what you would like to see and do. I'll make my list short: Old Town - Salzburg, which is a true gem and easy to see a lot in a day. Alpine experince - Garmisch and Zugspitze trip. Quintessential Bavarian village with an alpine trip - Mittenwald (w/Karwendelbahn cable car).
Castle/Palace and short lake cruise - Chiemsee and Ludwig's amazing Herrenchiemsee palace (Neues Schloss). Paul

You might also like a visit to Ulm and the cathedral there. I believe it has the tallest church spire in Europe. The St. Michael statue in the church is wonderful. There is also a fine little museum in Ulm.
