Can anyone recommend places to stay in Nice, France, or even better somewhere in the South of France, that would allow us to make a day trip to Nice and Canne by car? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Vito. Suggest you get Rick Steves France book at bookstore or library. He covers this area extensively.
Villefranche-sur-Mer is a lovely smaller town near Nice and easy to drive into and park. Once at your base, however, I would use trains and not the rental car to visit Nice and Cannes. Driving and parking in those towns is tough.
I would concur with Villefranche - beautiful little town. We stayed in Nice last time, but next time we will stay in Villefranche. Ditch the car if you can before you even get to the Riviera, or park it and take the train in that area, as another person said. Driving in Nice is not recommended. Especially not on Friday afternoon, which was what we did in trying to drop the car there -- big mistake.
I agree with the others about not driving in Nice. You can take the bus or train to many places and it is very reasonable. I recommend Hotel de la Darse in Villefranche sur Mer.
