We are going to Hungary in July 2008. We are thinking about staying 3-4 nights near Eger or the surrounding area. Any advice or recommendations on places to stay? We will be six in all, four adults and 2 17 year olds.

Eger does have some nice accommodations, but for a better selection look at Miskolc, a much larger city. It also lies in the Tokaj region, even more famous for wine than Eger with its Egri bikaver (Bulls Blood). Both cities lie in hill country. From there you can make excursions to the Hungarian puszta (kinda like Eastern Wash, just with more local color).
Last time I was in Miskolc, we stayed at an old hotel called Awas; I bet it's still around because it was in the city center. Walked right into a big party with live music on a Friday night; music didn't let up until well after midnight. Communism never had so much fun as it had in Hungary!
