Places to Stay in Brussels

My husband and some friends of ours will be finishing up a Belgian beer tour in Brussels and would like some suggestions for places to stay there. We are on a budget, but are willing to spend a little money for somewhere unique. Our only real requirements are that it is clean and safe. Also, our friends are singletons and we like to go out at night, so although we don't want to party all night, we also don't want a snoozefest.

Hopefully, this isn't too tall of an order to fill!

Thanks for any help you can offer!

We were in Brussels in October and found it to be an expensive city overall. We enjoyed our stay at Les Ecrins--it's in a neighborhood and near the St. Catherine Metro stop.

My wife and I traveled to Brussels two years ago and we stayed at the Scandic Grand Place. Great little hotel with free breakfast and literally steps to the Grand Place. A few blocks from the Grand Place is a great area for bars, restaurants and night life. This hotel was inexpensive at the time when it was owned by Hilton. It appears now that it is no longer a Hilton property.

We also found that Brussels was a great anchor place to day trip to Bruges, Ghent, Denant (birth place of Adolf Sax - inventor of the Saxophone) and Luxembourg. Day tours are available. I think we payed about 75 Euro/each for a day trip which included a coach bus, guide, and admissions.

I know a little more than you asked but I started to get excited remembering my trip. :)
