My teenagers and I will be in Austria and Germany in April. When I went to make hostel or pension reservations (Rick's awesome recommendations)it turns out it is tha Bauma convention and the "where to sleep" prices have tripled! Can anyone tell me of a town on a trainline, no more than one hour outside of Munich(on the way to Salzburg) where we can sleep for a reasonable price? It must be walking distance to a station. We will stay there and zip into Munich early each morning. ?
Checkout the city of Rosenheim, which is less than 40 miles southeast of Munich. It's on the train line between Munich and Salzburg.
Booking.com has listings for accommodations in this town, some of which are very reasonable.
How much time did you want to spend in Munich? Because Salzburg is so close to Munich that it doesn't make a lot of sense to stay inbetween. If you're only doing one day in Munich, you could do it as a long day trip from Salzburg without a problem. I've done that in reverse (based in Munich, did Salzburg as a day trip)
