I'll be in Uzes (1/2 hour West of Avignon, on the Western border of Provence) May 24-30. I've been to Provence twice previously and toured mostly East of Avignon. Now I'd like to take day trips from Uzes into the southern areas of Provence and into Eastern/Southern Languedoc. Any suggestions for areas, cities, beaches, markets, restaurants, etc. would be very welcome. Thanks so much!
follow Kent's advice. I've been to most of the places he mentions and they are lovely. You'll be hard-pressed to find a walled medieval town as well-preserved as Carcassonne with as many restaurants and quaint shops. The gardens in Nimes are beautiful. If you are a Van Gogh fan, Arles and St Remy are must-sees.
Hi Holly, We rented an apartment in Beaucaire for a week and enjoyed this small town on the river and canal. We went to an interesting beach south of Salin de Giraud in the Camargue area. To the east and north is the Gorges du Verdon; a bit of a drive but if you like scenery in the middle of nowhere, a good outing. We always enjoy Pont du Gard, Arles, Avignon, Les Baux de Provence.
If you want to see beautiful country, go as far as Montpellier on the coast, and then travel toward Pezenas, with a stay in Caux - Small town untouched basically by any tourist - it has one restaurant, with one choice of meal per day. Fabulous B&B there is the Stone House B&B -- check it's web site. In the wine producing region, it was my favorite place on a trip there in 2006.
