Places to eat in Paris

My mother and I will be in Paris in 2 weeks. I am looking for suggestions for excellent, moderately priced places to eat around Paris. We will be staying near Rue Cler, but will be hitting most of the tourist spots. Thank you for any suggestions!

Laura, We've stayed in the Rue Cler area a couple of times, and there are a number of good restaurants in Rick's Paris book. We've liked La Fontaine de Mars, Le P'tit Troquet, Chez Agnes, La Varangue. In October we stayed in the Latin Quarter, and we followed some of his for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th areas. All were excellent. When in doubt go with one of his suggestions. They are usually busy and have lots of atmosphere. Don't forget the street markets for picnic food too. He has all price ranges so that helps.

We used many of Rick's recommendations on our trip to Paris [was it really 5 years ago? sigh] and all were excellent. But the food was excellent almost everywhere we ate in France - there was one bad meal on Mt St Michel, and the rest fell somewhere between good and outstanding. So enjoy his suggestions, but don't hesitate to walk in to some little restaurant that's on your way. And have a wonderful time!

Rick's book is PACKED with recommendations for this neighborhood. And have you looked at the Paris guidebook restaurant feedback section on this site? Lots of tips there. My favorite is Cafe Constant (in the book).

I suggest going to the Latin Quarter near Notre Dame. There are lots of places to eat... cheap and expensive but they were all good

Hi, Ride the bus or metro over to Place de la Contrascarpe and Rue Mouffetard (near the Pantheon)in the university district. There are many small restaurants with a variety of foods from around the world. There is a great street market on Rue Mouffetard and it is a fun neighborhood. Enjoy Paris and the French people. Best: La Varangue in Paris
Why: If in Paris and you are looking for a restaurant that serves wonderful food, is moderately priced, has few tables and personal service, then La Varangue is a place for you. We are two retired teachers from Wisconsin (Philippe maybe you remember us.) that enjoyed Paris immensely, After hours of walking and touring, we were looking for a more casual restaurant AND FOUND IT. Philippe, the owner and chef, greeted us with a smile, pulled up a chair to our table and explained what was on the chalk board menu. We enjoyed our experience SOOO much that we returned for 3 nights in a row. and we would have returned the next night too, if it had not been closed. On our first night at La Varangue, we chatted with a young couple from California. On the following nights the same couple and others we met had returned to enjoy Philippe's food, his smile, and company. We tried the goat cheese salad, escargot, avocado salad, roasted chicken in pepper sauce, scallops, chicken in tarragon sauce, pork tenderloin, wine, desserts etc. Wow, what a feast. We (Sharon and Susan) wish we could be there now!
