Has anyone been to the Dordogne this summer and have suggestions for places or events not to miss? We'll be with kids en tow and love markets, food, cycling, interesting small towns off the beaten path.
Thanks.
Biiiig fan of the Dordogne! Canoe from Vitrac to Beynac, passing by the gorgeous La Roque-Gageac. Sarlat for the market days and just all-round coolness. The Cro-Magnon caves should really not be missed: Grotte du Font-du-Gaume is close by at Les Eyzies, Peche Merle is not too far away.
I second the market at Sarlat ( and the town in general ). I also second a canoe trip down the river. If you're up for it, biking is great there - don't let anyone fool you into thinking that it's terribly difficult ( it isn't ). From Sarlat ( where my wife and I were based ) you have to climb up medium-sized hills to get out of town, but once you do that, it's fairly flat. If you ride at all, then it's no problem.
I highly recommend Beynac, and Dome was really cool, too. La Roque was OK, but both my wife and I found it underwhelming. Regardless of what you do, you should have a great time just soaking up the atmosphere.
We wanted to go canoeing but my sister injured her leg the day we arrived in the area and she didn't want to try to get in and out of a canoe, so instead we took an hour boat ride from La Roque Gageac to the bridge at Castelnaud and back. The boats were similar to the kind in "Chocolat". They had headphones that translated the tour guide's narration and it was very enjoyable. I also went on a 2 hour horseback ride from a stable called Ferme de Fonluc. It was outstanding! Have fun!
Thank you for all of your replies. We are big cyclers so we're planning to have bikes for a week.
