places in Lisbon

We are having a very hard time finding a decent place to rent in Lisbon at less than 100euros a night. Is this standard? We would appreciate any information anyone has on renting an apartment that has a decent size bed, i.e. two twins a king size or a queen size bed, close to the Baixa the Bairro or the Rossio. We would even settle for a decent hotel with a little more room than one for a double bed. We will be there for a week. We are flying in on a Monday and know from previous travels that we will have jet lag for the first few days so we want a place close in and not 4 flights of steps to get to our room. Two flights would be ideal but we can handle three. We have been on VRBO, GoLisbon, airbnb, everyone we find that seems perfect is either booked or has a 140cm bed or is on the third floor(read 4 flights up) with no elevator.
The hotels in Rick Steve's book for Lisbon seem dismal or way over our price range, which is about $100.00 a night.

We have stayed at the Residencial Florescente many times. Our son and family also stayed there earlier this year and had a room with a double(or queen) bed and also a single with a trundle for their daughters. The room was fairly large. They have an elevator and are located in a pedestrian only area, close to transportation and walking distance to some sights. You can check them out at booking.com and tripadvisor.com.

We took a chance and stayed at hotel Insulana recommended in Rick's book. The room was clean with comfortable bed (larger than a double) and staff was great. It has an elevator and location is good-Biaxa area. It was very inexpensive when we stayed there several years ago. Quiet at night also.

The Insulana is no longer in Rick's 2012 book and when we talked to a Rick Steves' travel consultant he said that the Residencila Florencente is no longer being recommended. So we are still looking. Looks like the best bet is in the Chiado area with many steps. We can handle steps but with suitcases it is a challenge.
We have gotten an answer from a couple in the Chiado area that looks good. You pay your money you take your chances. We really don't want to pay more than 110 a night. We will be traveling for seven weeks and we travel frugally as we are not big bucks people but we love travel. And thanks to Rick we have traveled a lot in the past 6 years.

Interesting that RS is no longer recommending Florescente. As mentioned above we stayed there for 9 days in April and our son and his family stayed there for 5 days. We all enjoyed our stay there.Regardless, you can still check out customer reviews on booking.com and virtualtourist.com on the Florescente or other hotels. These reviews help us in making our hotel decisions. They may help you as well.
