We are looking for a nice relaxing place to stay in the Salzburg area for four days that would allow us the flexibility to make day trips with our rental car or bus line. As interesting as the city itself seems, we would rather stay a a place where we could ride bikes or walk for excercise after supper. Of course we want to see salzburg so a short bus ride into the city would be nice so we can leave our car at the hotel. Will the Salzburg card allow us to use the bus service for free? Good resturant at the hotel or close is a must. Any ideas?
I have enjoyed staying at Pension Ballwein off of Moosestrasse on the outskirts of Salzburg. It's located in the country/farming community of Salzburg. From here, you can take a 15 minute bus into the city. The bus runs late into the evening. If you want a family-run hotel with a restaurant, you could stay at the Bloberger Hotel which is also off of Moosestrasse. I have not stayed at Bloberger Hotel, however, they have rave reviews and is also recommended in the Rick Steves' tour book. I have enjoyed long, quiet evening walks along Moosestrasse under the stars and can't wait to return. Enjoy!
Excellent place outside Salzburg, 5 minute walk to light rail.

Hi Jay, my favorite place is a small lake surrounded by mountains, about 20 minutes outside of Salzburg, called Thumsee, near Bad Reichenhall, Germany. Hotel Seeblick offers dinner but unfortunately the other restaurant on the lake will be closing soon (Madlbauer). Bad Reichenhall has a great salt water spa, RupertusTherme and a nice saline museum. Thumsee is, for us, a perfectly sized lake for a quick hike, a great place to swim in the summer, and just a great get-away spot. You can search my blog site for lots of photos at different times of the year if you are interested.... It's www.marthasvienna.blogspot.com. Enjoy your trip!
