Thanks for the suggestions! Have you stayed in any places listed on their sites?

I'm not sure they have what you're looking for but you could try France Homestyle. We stayed in one of their properties in Provence and were very satisfied with the property, service, and value. They have some listings near Nice.

I haven't used Gites de France or Homelidays but I believe they have many property listings.

holiday-rentals.co.uk was a good site for us. We found a weekly rental through them that we were quite happy with.

The Stone House B&B - Caux, near Penzas...so small it may not be on your map even...the BEST B&B in France, bar none...and inexpensive with good food and great accommodations....check out the area as well...only a short ride to the sea coast, and a bit more to Montpellier....the most relaxing place I found in France. Not really that close to Nice now that I read the rest of your post....

2 months in summer in Nice? Too much of a tourist trap.
Try at least splitting it up to the "other" south of France, Languedoc-Roussillon region. This is where the french go on vacation. Tons to do & see without the the masses.

Thanks for the idea of trying another area away from Nice.....I just need the Mediterranean close by...I'll look further down the coast....I hope to take day trips to other areas also. Do you have ideas of where to stay in the Languedoc area which do not cost an arm and a leg?

Hi Sharon, Check out mybeaucaire.com I have rented this apartment from the owners (they live in Brooklyn). The apartment is huge with three nice bedrooms, a good kitchen, and a large living room, outside patio. The location of Beaucaire is perfect; close to the beach, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Nimes, etc. The website represents the apartment very well.
