We'll be spending 2 nights in Nice in early October. Any suggestions on family friendly (2 boys) places to stay that also have some European character?

This October? You might want to get right on it! Rick has some great suggestions in his Provence guidebook such as Hôtel Mercure Marché aux Fleurs or the Hôtel Windsor (both are shown as $$$). Some $$ hotels are Hôtel Lafayette and Hôtel de la Mer.
I stayed at Windsor in 1998 and at Marché aux Fleurs this last May, (and preferred Marché aux Fleurs).
