Place to lay our head in southern Black Forest

Greetings, Our family will be driving from Amsterdam to Milan and would like accommodations in central or southern Black Forest. We will have a car, but would prefer not to stay too far off the beaten track. Ideally, someplace where lots of charm and an authentic german meal would be superb.

(Our sightseeing will be done in northern Germany due to time restrictions. We will unfortunately not have much time to sightsee in the southern region.)

Well, I don't think the southern Black Forest would be my choice, nor would I do it by car, but given your choice, I think that Triberg would be someplace you should check into.

My favorite Black Forest town is Oberkirch, which is located about half way between Amsterdam and Milan and is just 6 miles east of the A5 autobahn on the B28. The town has many good small hotels and restaurants, a rushing mountain stream flowing through the center, and flowers everywhere. If you want to enjoy some good Black Forest Trout, this is the place. The tourist office there will help you select a hotel (they have pictures & prices).

We very much enjoyed a one night stay in Staufen, nice ruins at top of a small hill, cute shops, outdoor market on the day we were there. Enjoyed our rooms at a very nice small hotel - Hotel Kreuz Post. Had dinner there as well and it was wonderful.

We thought Triberg too touristy but liked Frieburg very much though it was much larger than Staufen.

I'd vote for either Freiburg im Breisgau or Stauffen. Stauffen is very pretty, picturesque and pretty small as well. Freiburg is a university city with great nightlife, a beautiful pedestrian zone, a cathedral and you can take a cable car up the mountains...
