We are currently in Murren planning on going up on the Jungfrau train tomorrow (forecast is clear all day). I'm trying to get my bearings on which way the best views are in relation to the sun at various times of day. Any help from other photographers on when the best time of day to photograph this area assuming the weather to be equally clear all day? Should we head up first thing in the morning if the skies are clear or would we be better off waiting until afternoon? Thanks!
I'm sorry I am not a photographer so I can't help with any technical advice. But I've been up to Jungfrau a couple times and will tell you that the weather is extremely fickle and difficult to predict. I would head up there in the morning, that is when it is most likely to be clear, and hope for the best. You can stay up there all day if you want, and take lots of photos as the conditions change. If the conditions are not ideal, just wait, they will likely change.
Looking at the geography and time of year, from Kleine Scheidegg could be very nice right after sunrise. The Eiger is just a few points south of due East when looking from Kleine Scheidegg, so the sun will be behind the Eiger most of the day, meaning you may be shooting into the sun for the better part of the day. The valley immediatly below the Eiger will be in shadow. Looks like late sfternoon, as the sun moves to the west, the Eiger should be very well lit.
The best photos I have taken up there were inside the ice palace-the lighting is intriguiging and the portraits we took are great. Outside, it depends which way you look. If you head out and look out over Konkordiaplatz down the glacier toward Eggishorn, you are looking nearly due south; depending on what time of year the sun may be in front of or behind you. As I recall, you cannot actually see the Jungfrau itself from this area; you are too close. You might like the walk out to Mönchsjoch Hutte and should get some good views from there.
One of the best ways to get photos of Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau is take the cable car up from Wengen to Mannlichen and then walk across the trail (very easy going) to Kleine Scheidegg - about 1.5 hours. If it is a good weather day you cannot beat the views you will have of all three peaks. If weather is not good - rain or low (relatively speaking) clouds then don't take that walk. We were just there about one week ago and weather was wonderful. It has been a yearly walk for us for about the past 25 years. Probably best to head up first thing in morning, as clouds tend to move in during later in the day.
Thanks for the help. It's 7:00 am here and the skies are clear. I can see every peak from our hotel window in Murren. We're going to do the Mannlichen to Kleine Sheidegg hike this morning and then head up as soon as we're done. I appreciate the advice from those who've been here before. Happy travels.
