Photographing gargoyles from the top of Notre Dame?

Hello-I am interested in climbing to the top of Notre Dame because I heard in a previous thread you can get up close with the gargoyles. I'd really love to get a photo of a gargoyle in the foreground with the city in the background. Is this possible? If so, where would be the best place to find that shot up there and what time of day is best? We will be in Paris in late May or early June 2011? Thanks for your help. China

The best foreground/background shots will be taken from the platform between the towers facing roughly west (SW to NW). There are several choices for gargoyles and several choices for backgrounds, including the Eiffel Tower in the distance. You will have plenty of time while there to make your choices. The best 360 city views can be had from the next level - the top of the south tower. That is, best in the sense that they are from the very center of Paris. Others might argue that others buildings offer better specific views. Higher is not always better. The views from the top of the Eiffel tower, for example, are too high to identify any interesting detail.

You will need to climb up to the bell tower, then proceed to the walkway along the front of the two towers. Facing the back of the church, you can see quite a variety of gargoyles (I even spotted an elephant). However, the more famous gargoyles are positioned along the front of the church, with typical Paris in the background. You can walk all along the fenced-in ledge, and place your lens between the wires. Morning light could put these gargoyles in shadow, so early afternoon might be a better time.

Thank you both so much! This was exactly what I was hoping to find out. I've seen really cool shots like this and would like to take some of my own-perhaps convert them to B&W for a timeless feel. Thanks again!

I have a similar photo from our first trip to Paris in 1972. If I change it to B&W, will I be 21 again? Here's hoping!

Don't worry too much about finding a place to take great Gargoyle photos[INVALID]you'll get them. As you climb, they are pretty strict in where you walk and when you walk. There's not a whole of freedom, its definitely not like the top of the Eiffel Tower. Also, keep in mind that the best times to go up (just to go up, not taking into consideration the lighting for photos) is in the morning when the lines are short. I really enjoyed climbing to the top; there are WONDERFUL views.
