Penzions

What exactly is a penzion? Is it the same as a B & B? I'm looking for accommodations in Mikulov in the Czech Republic. Does anyone have any recommendations?

A pension is usually a small family run hotel where breakfast is normally served as part of your room rate. (like a B&B) Sorry I can recommend any in the country you are traveling to.

I googled Pensions in Mikulov and found twelve. It is possible that there are more because some of them don't have a website. Few years ago I stayed in nearby Pavlov in pension U Floriana. Nice location. Beautiful view of Girls Castle from the window. I was satisfied with accommodation.

Thank you. There appear to be more penzions in Mikulov than hotels.

In Germany, almost any establishment, even most hotels, is a B&B. Breakfast in the morning is included with the cost of the room. The few that don't are the big overpriced hotels. They charge extra for breakfast for the same reason airlines charge for checking bags - to conceal the real cost. In the only place I have stayed in the Czech Rep, breakfast was included. The big difference I find is that hotels have a lobby with a frequently manned front desks, pensions don't. When you arrive at a pension, you often have to ring a bell at the front door. Someone in the pension will "buzz" you in and come to the entry to meet you. Once you are checked in, you are given a key to the front door (along with your room key), and you come and go as you please. Often, they will ask you when you want breakfast, and it will be ready at that time. You don't just come down to the dining room whenever you want.

Pensions and B&B's pretty much overlap along with small hotels and over the years we have not noticed any hard and fast demarcation. The only thing being whether breakfast is included with the room. I have no recommendations for where you are going but, were I in your situation, I would go to booking.com and venere.com and see what they have. We have found their descriptions etc. to be pretty reliable over the years.

Look at the town's website: www.mikulov.cz On the top right, click on English, unless, of course, you know Czech. Then click on "services" in the Tourism box. You will then be able to look at accommodations. The website also has lots of information on what to see and do in the town. I prefer to stay in pensions versus hotels. Generally, they are less expensive but as nice and clean as a hotel. Have a great time.
