Passports in Spain

Ok when traveling in Spain do you keep your passport on you at all times or leave it in the hotel safe ? I've read different advice ie. make and carry a copy--you HAVE to have it when you use your credit card...etc.
advice please...thanks...

I'd leave it in the safe and carry a copy. I've been to Spain many times and I've never been asked to produce a passport when using a credit card, or at any other time, for that matter (except when checking in to a hotel).

We were in Spain a month ago. We were often asked for ID when paying with a credit card, but used our US driver's license instead of a passport. That was fine.

From a city publication in Spain:"....Everyone in Spain must carry government issued ID at all times, regardless of whether we are Spanish, an EU national, or a foreigner living or holidaying in the country. The specific law is Article 4 of Organic Law 4/2000 which states in unambiguous terms that foreign nationals in Spain must carry identity documents issued by the country of citizenship. The operative word is 'carry' – not to be confused with keep at home. Thus, if you live in Spain, and you don't have Spanish government issued photo ID, you must carry at all times your own nation's photo ID, ......" We just got back a couple of days ago. Most of the time we carried our passports, and used them when asked for ID, but I also used my US drivers license, or my IDP; which is required if you drive in Spain. The key word is "photo ID".
