My first suggestion would be "don´t", because available street parking is almost non-existant, leaving the few (and expensive) parking garages as your only option. Although you should be able to find a spot in one of them, it may be in one inconveniently located. As with many large European cities, "follow the P´s", meaning you will see signs directing you to the parking garages and each sign will show the number of spots remaining. When you see signs, turn off the GPS and follow them. Each garage will usually have a name which corresponds to a nearby attraction or neighborhood.
Thankfully our hotel had a parking garage, but a word of warning: have a very good, very detailed map, a good driver and a good navigator, and nerves of steel. It was a white-knuckle experience for me recently, what with the one-way streets, construction projects creating detours and, most significantly, a huge number of pedestrians and bicyclists who did not hesitate to step out/pedal out in front of cars.
Driving on the "wrong" side of the road for two weeks in England was a piece of cake after driving in and out of Munich...hopefully your experience will be different!
