We'll be staying in Ingolstadt 45 min. North of Munich and will be driving to Munich quite a bit. I've heard that parking is difficult there. Any suggestions on where I can park reasonably priced and then take subway to specific spots? It would be nice if parking was in a downtown garage next to most sights.
My brief experience with parking in Munich was... that there is no parking! OK, there probably is some parking somewhere, but it is not abundant. Taking the train into town and renting a bicycle might be a better option than driving, if possible.
I would just like to add to what Tom has said. There are about 2 local trains (RB or RE) an hour from Ingolstadt to München in the morning and same back in the afternoon. As both cities are in Bavaria, you can ride local trains all day after 9am (both ways) for up to 5 people on a single Bayern-Ticket at 27 euros. The Bayern-Ticket is also good on the München SBahn/UBahn system. The rides between these cities take about 45 to 60 minutes. See the Deutsches Bahn site for times:

It is hard to beat the train for this kind of trip.
We stayed in a town outside of Munich and took the train in every day. It was great! The public transportaion system is wonderful and very easy. We loved not having to worry about driving back to our place at the end of each long day. Also, I put off renting a car until we were ready to leave Muich.
Yes, I too didn't pick up my rental car until the day I left the city. That brief experience convinced me that Munich was, thankfully, made for people and bicycles, not automobiles.
