Parking by Porta Nigra in Trier Germany

Can anyone tell me where to locate parking near Porta Nigra? The only references I found so far either say parking is "nearby" or listed by a name (i.e. the "XX lot"). No mention of an address or even a street name. I really don't want to drive into the area without any clue as to where to locate a lot or garage. Something like "go to XX street between A and B" would be much appreciated.
Also. I plan to walk the sights between the Gate and the Baths. Is parking by the gate a good location for this?

I cannot give you the street addresses you are hoping for because we couldn't find them either. We visited Trier by car last summer, and parking was actually very easy. As you drive into the center, there are many large, blue and white signs with the letter "P" on them. Each sign has a list of the parking lots by name, arrows pointing which way to go, and an electronic display of how many spaces are currently available in each lot. You can pick which one you want based on availability. Sounds confusing, but it was actually really cool. There are several lots, and the town center is pretty small, so you don't have to worry too much about which one you use. The Porta Nigra is a short walk from any of them. If you do have the name of a lot, you will be able to find it using the signs. The streets are so confusing, I'm not sure having a street address helps much anyway.

I'll make this easy. Don't bother with street names. If you try to navigate through the winding streets in most cities of Germany by following the street names, you'll never find anything. When you approach Trier (or any city in Germany), you'll see signs that indicate where you can park. It may be a listing of nearby landmarks, or it may be a color-coded schematic of the city. Look for the name of the landmark you want to visit, or failing that, just go to "Zentrum" "Mitte", "Markt" or "Rathaus". It may even tell you how many empty spaces remain. Then, simply follow the signs to the parking area. Using this simple method, you can't go wrong. I don't recall exactly where I parked in Trier, but it was very close to the pedestrian shopping street. The Porta Nigra is at the end of this street.

Street parking near the Porta Nigra is like looking for hen's teeth. I even tried after the restrictions ended in the evening. Not easy. Also, the area around there is highly controlled, and the parking periods are short. I don't remember how long. The previous posters have the right idea. Forget the street names and follow the signs. There is a garage very near the Basilica that might suit better than the ones higher up on the shopping precinct but Trier is a pretty small area and reasonably walkable once you are parked. Parking was particularly difficult near the station as I remember.
