paris transit

We're all ready to leave for Paris in a couple of days - our first trip - I can't wait. I really don't understand Rick's info re: the transit. He says: " The same tickets are good on the Metro, RER (within the city), and city buses (but not to transfer between Metro/RER and bus)."
1. Can you transfer from Metro to RER on the same ticket? 2. Is it that you just can't transfer from the bus to either of the other 2?
3. Can we buy a "carnet" of 10 tickets when we arrive at the airport?
4. Rick says the trip from the airport to the city costs about 8E (from his 2007 book) so does that mean that we couldn't use one of the book of 10 to get into town?
A little confused,
Carol

Answers: 1) Yes, your RER ticket is good to transfer to the Metro...as long as you don't exit the system, the ticket is good....keep it with you until you exit. 2) The tickets are good on the bus OR the metro/RER combination. You cannot use the same ticket to transfer from bus to Metro or RER...or vice-versa. 3) No, the carnet of 10 tickets, which I think is around 11.70 Euro now, is only for travel on the metro, and the RER in Zone one and part of zone 2, which is essentially Paris within the Peripherique highway area...Paris itself. 4) CDG airport is in Zone 5, so the fare is about 8.60 Euro since it is in a more distant zone. If you go to http://www.ratp.info/informer/anglais/index.php, you will find acccess to the Paris Metro and RER maps. On the Metro map, you will see hash marks on the RER lines....that's as far as a single ticket from your carnet will carry you on the rail service. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. For example, a ticket from your carnet will take you via Metro Line 1 all the way to the La Defense stop in the northwest of Paris. But on the RER Line C, it's only good to the Charles de Gaulle/Etoile stop...one stop before La Defense. Hope that helps.
