Can anyone share their experiences if they've traveled this way? Pricey? Comfortable? Hidden costs if tickets purchased from the US? Thanks.
I haven't taken the Paris-Venice night train, but based on my experience on the Paris-Nice night train I can definitely recommend night trains.
You'll find the best prices, including discount fares, if you book well in advance (up to three months allowed) at www.voyages-sncf.com.

Just to post an opposing view ...
I've taken many night trains when I was younger and hosteling through Europe on a budget. Taking the night train saves the cost of a hotel but this can be at the expense of sleep. I hate night trains. As a light sleeper, I am pretty much awake all night on the night train ... reasonably comfortable, but still awake. I usually arrive in the city the next day with a headache and feeling like I need a shower. So ask yourself how well you sleep. If you are able to sleep on a plane or with noise, the night train might be fine. Make sure to check the flight options. Now with all the discount airlines, the price can be comparable.
I guess we did this route last December, although we got off in Milan. Although we booked just over one month prior to travel we as a family of 4 had to sleep in 2 separate 6 berth couchettes. So if you decide to do it, don't leave it to the last minute to book. I had a broken night's sleep, but was pleased we had the experience. I don't think the odd broken night's sleep is too much of an issue, although I do agree it can leave you a little tired the next day, but as a one of I thought it okay.
