While in Paris for a long stay, my husband and I would love to travel to Rome. I have always wanted to see the Sistine Chapel. It would be a short trip. We will only be there three nights. Looking for advice on whether to fly or go by train. A recommendation on a modest accommodation would be appreciated. Thanks
Fly...quicker and cheaper alternative to the train, especially with only three days. Discount airlines easyjet and Vueling fly this route, and the sooner you book, the better deal you'll likely get. Be aware, though, of check-in times and all baggage rules. The "big boys" like Air France will also likely offer a competetive fare on this route, possibly with better schedules and baggage allowances.
I second Norm's advice to give you a second opinion.
We are taking the night-train and staying at the Cheap'n Chic Hotel. (No idea how this will go but the location is great, right by the Colosseo.) I think if we were heading back to Paris instead of continuing an Italian adventure we would fly.
Our rationale for going to Rome this way is that since it is the farthest south we will go this trip we will not have a chance to chicken out if they weather is "too hot". This happened last time. Granted we are pretty much heat weenies but we really wanted to see Rome again.
yes, I say definitely fly if you're only staying for 3 days. It's really not worth the long travel time by train. I don't have a recommendation for accommodation, but I would just caution being too far away from city center or Vatican because Rome is really not well connected by subway. For a major tourist destination, they're really lacking on the local transportation, but can't blame them because of all the underground treasures they have lurking there.
Good luck!
