We have never been to France before and have four days to drive from Paris to Nimes. Which would be the nicest route to take, and towns to stop in? We would prefer to avoid highways. Will this be rushing it too much? Thanks for any help.
Four days could be plenty of time (you could make it in day by Autoroute). There's a variety of scenery and terrain that lies between so a recommendation would depend on what you'd like to see - the Loire with its castles, Burgundy with its wine, Lyon, etc.
You may want to use the Autoroutes for part of the way. They can get you across a lot of distance quickly. While it's scenic to take the national roads (look on the map for roads with numbers beginning with N), they run through the centers of each town along the way and often have farm equipment slowing traffic.
Get a Michelin map of France and do some dreaming!
Doug is absolutely right about Michelin for a road trip in France. Their maps indicate scenic routes, their green guides prioritize sights and suggest auto itineraries, and their famous red guide is all about food and lodging (including budget options).
