Paris to Munich and stop in between

My wife and two teenage daughters are staying in Paris for a few days this summer and then going to Munich. We want to spend a couple nights along the way in a smaller town. We may do the train or drive. We are thinking of either 1) taking train to Frankfurt and renting a car and driving to Rothenburg and staying there for a couple nights before going to Munich; or 2) taking the train or car to Colmar, France and spending a couple nights before going to Munich. Any thoughts about which route/towns would be better?

There's quite a few great towns to stop on the way. First option, you could stop in Strasbourg and see Alsace towns (Colmar, Riquewihr, etc.). Second option, you stop in Heidelberg, see castles and assorted other things, hit Rothenberg OdT, down to Munich. Third option, stop in Stuttgart, which is where you'd change trains anyway to Munich (Paris-STR has an express train), see Ludwigsburg Palace, assorted castles, Mercedes Museum and Factory, Porsche Museum (I'm NOT in to cars, but they were fascinating), plus much more. Either way you go, I recommend the train for at least the first portion out of Paris, then you could drive the rest of the way to Munich, it's easy autobahn driving and gives you the freedom to stop where ever you like.
