Hey travelers!
I'm going to Ireland, The UK and France this summer and am flying in and out of Dublin! I'll be spending the last leg of my trip in Paris and on my last/second to last day I want to see Mont St. Michel (I know it's super touristy but it looks like something straight out of Lord of the Rings and I would hate myself if I didn't go). My question is how to do that on the cheap? Travel is my biggest concern: how do I get from Paris to the Mont to Dublin.
hi again, nothings on the cheap in europe. You have limited amount of time, so use it wisely. if you want to do Paris justice, your 5 days is good. I also went to Mont St Michel and guess what. I didnt do it in one day. I booked a room in Bayeux in the Normandy area and took a shuttle from one of the Bayeux hotels. That shuttle cost if i remember correctly (iirc) 65 United States Dollares (USD). that trip took ALL DAY too. Getting from Paris to Bayeux by train takes approximtely 2 hours. The train fair wasnt expensive. I looked into taking a train to Mont St Michel, but no joy. you will need to travel by bus also, and depending on the day of the week you go, running times will be limited. you really need to do some homework on your travel. again, get RS book on Europe travel thru the back door and his other books on England and France. theres a section on Mont st Michel and how to get there. happy trails.
I guarantee you I've done plenty of homework :-) I've been planning this trip since last summer, I just wanted to know if these "back door" forums had any tips/tricks for me.
Thank you.
hi again, i forgot to add, that shuttle from Bayeux to Mont st Michel was an all day trip. iirc, it took about 1 hour to get there. glad you did some research. maybe someone else has a secret way to get there on the cheap, but all i used was RS book and look at train schedules and it more or less had the same info as RS book. happy trails.
Have you looked into the ferries from Brittany or Normandy to Ireland? But as Ray has indicated, it's not an easily reachable site if you don't have either a car or several days to deal with not-so-direct public transportation. It is unique and deserves to be included in your next trip if you can't make it this time. Hopefully, you'll be able to see all the other interesting things in the vicinity.
Next time, consider a multi-city air route, into one city and out of another. Whatever extra the ticket might cost will be more than made up for by saving time and associated costs such as getting back to Ireland.
